Eelgrass Composites

Studio Seagrass is a Dutch sustainability project that utilizes eelgrass to create a variety of carbon-neutral building materials.

Eelgrass can be composed into a multitude of products such as formed fiberboards. These surpass properties of today's wood composite
building materials such as OSB boards by being 100% bio-based, naturally fire-retardant, and highly insulating.

Eelgrass fully reproduces itself annually, comes ashore without
human effort, and can be salvaged, dried, and pressed into round bales using very little energy.

In addition, eelgrass is not just CO2-neutral; it consists mainly of carbon and thus binds significant amounts of CO2 while growing in the ocean and acts as a carbon bank.

Eelgrass composite panels can be formed with different densities and finishes that range from acoustic paneling to insulation. Using natural binders found in the grass, the panels don’t release any toxic gas products after installation.

Much like stone brick and wood, eelgrass panels express their age and history over time. Unlike plastic or lacquered building materials,
natural building materials become part of the story of a place: reintroducing a tactile and dynamic character to the relationship between product and material.
